Your sewer lateral is the line from the gully trap to the council connection. It is the most commonly relined pipe on Wellington property and it is almost always the one behind repeat blockages.

Tree roots, and why cutting them out never lasts

Roots are the single most common cause of damaged residential sewer drains in this city, and they are the reason most people end up on this page.

Roots do not break into sound pipe. They find an existing weakness: a hairline crack, a broken section, a joint that ground movement has pulled open. Once a root tip is through, it thickens year on year until the drain blocks. Cutting them out clears the line for a season or two. Then they come back through the same opening, because the opening is still there.

Relining removes the opening. A cured liner has no joints and no cracks, so there is nothing for a root to exploit. That is the difference between a repair and a recurring maintenance bill, and it is why relining suits Wellington properties with established trees, steep sections or drains running under landscaped ground.

What we repair on sewer lines

80 metres in a single set-up

On a standard 100mm residential sewer drain, our system installs up to 80 metres of liner from one set-up, subject to site conditions and pipe layout.

That number matters more than it sounds. A long lateral running from the house down to the street connection can often be lined in one visit, from one access point, rather than broken into stages with separate set-ups and separate disruption each time.

Sewer problems announce themselves. A blocked toilet is hard to ignore.

Stormwater failures are quieter. A cracked stormwater line can leak for years without anyone noticing, right up until the downpour that backs water against a foundation or floods a garage. By then the pipe has usually been shedding water into the surrounding ground for a long time, which on a Wellington slope is its own problem.

Three things kill stormwater pipe here, and they compound

Ground movement pulls rigid pipe apart at the joints. Wellington's combination of slopes, fill and seismic activity means this happens faster here than in most of the country.

Root intrusion follows, because an open joint is an invitation. Roots in a stormwater line restrict flow long before they block it outright.

Silt and soil ingress finishes the job. Once soil is entering through a defect it settles in the low points, and the pipe steadily loses capacity. The drain that coped with a heavy southerly ten years ago now backs up.

A liner addresses all three at once. It seals the joints, closes the root entry points and restores a smooth full-bore surface.

What we repair on stormwater lines

If your property has never had its stormwater surveyed and the house predates the 1980s, it is worth a camera.

Patch and
junction repairs

Not every damaged drain needs the whole run lined. Where the camera shows one defect and clean pipe either side of it, a short patch is the right repair, and it costs a fraction of a full reline.

When a patch is right

One defect, sound pipe elsewhere. A single cracked section, one open joint, one damaged spot flagged on a pre-purchase drainage report. Typically half a metre to two metres of liner installed over the fault.

Budget staging. Occasionally a property has several defects and an owner who needs to spread the work. We will patch the urgent one and give you a written view on how long the others have.

When it is not

Multiple defects on one run. If patching means four separate repairs on the same pipe, a full reline is cheaper and better. We will tell you when the maths turns over.

General deterioration. Widespread root intrusion or a pipe that surveys poorly along its length needs lining end to end.

Junction repairs

Where a branch line meets the main lateral is the weakest point in most drainage systems, and the hardest point to excavate, because it is usually the deepest and most awkwardly placed. Junction liners and top-hat repairs seal the connection from the inside, sealing both the main line and the branch at the intersection.

Patching is lower-value work for us than relining. We recommend it anyway when the camera says that is what the pipe needs, because the alternative is selling people repairs they do not require, and that is a short business.

When digging is the expensive option

On a lot of Wellington properties, excavation is not a simple job. Steep sections, narrow access, concrete, decks, retaining walls, mature planting and no room for a machine all push the price up fast, and much of that cost is not the pipe at all. It is getting to the pipe and putting everything back afterwards.

There are exceptions. A drain running under an open lawn with easy machine access can genuinely be cheaper to dig. We will tell you when that is your situation.
